The two victim counselling centres supported by the state of NRW - Back Up and OBR - advise and support people who are affected by extreme right attacks, racist violence or other forms of prejudice-motivated violence. They provide a safe space for affected people to talk about their experience and help people to overcome the consequences of an attack and gain new scope for action. The service is aimed at those who are directly affected, relatives, friends, acquaintances and witnesses of an act of violence.

  • For example, depending on the need and what is wanted, the support can include:
  • Information concerning legal questions
  • Personal support during interviews with the police and procedures with other authorities
  • Help with the search for witnesses or a legal advisor
  • Research concerning situations involving a threat
  • Mediation in relation to medical or therapeutic help
  • Support in preparing a trial and following it up
  • Advice in dealing with media and case-related public relations work
  • Support in applying for damages
  • Suggestions for solidarity processes

The scope and all the steps relating to the support are determined by the persons concerned. The services are free of charge, confidential, anonymous upon request and take place independently of any report. The consultation work is essentially mobile and takes place at a location chosen by the affected person.
